East Grinstead Town 2-1 Faversham Town
Starting line up:
William Godmon,
Ryan Cooper, Jamie Maxted, Matthew Bourne, John Scarborough,
Josh Stanford, Daniel Carrington, George Monger, Charley Robertson,
Renford Tenyue, Dean Grant.
I suppose this has to go into the "How the hell did we lose this one category?".
After a bright start, we somehow find ourselves 2-0 down after half an hour. We
get back in it with a bizarre own goal. But my "How the hell...." reference is
really referring to the second half. One way traffic for the entire half as we
battered EG, but that deserved equaliser steadfastly refused to materialise. Read on.
As already said, a really bright start from us. Renford Tenyue on the right touchline,
squares inside for Charley Robertson who in turn sets up Josh Stanford just outside
of the box, but the low shot is wide of the left hand post. An EG free-kick, 25 yards(ish)
from their left, decent strike, it's going in, but William Godmon gets under it and at full
stretch tips it over for a corner. George Monger finds a lovely through ball into the run
of Josh Stanford. Josh is brought down just on the edge of the box. I'm not sure if the
free-kick was awarded for the foul or the keeper seemingly handling the ball outside of the
box. Nevertheless, George Monger's free-kick is saved by the keeper diving to his right.
Josh Stanford releases Renford Tenyue, into the area, left side, but the shot is dragged across goal
and passed the right hand post. And on 20, against the run of play, EG in our area, their left,
and the cross to the far post is headed across goal and into our net. 1-0. And 7 minutes later,
a snap shot from a central position just outside of our area, our keeper seems to have it saved,
parried above head height. Relief. But no, it drops into our net. So we're 2-0 down, and it
really seemed like "How did that happen?" We're playing well, but EG have a few chances and we're 2
down. Charley Robertson, great skill on the right byline, beats his men, lovely ball into
Dean Grant in the area, the shot is dragged passed the right hand post. On 35, Charley Robertson's
lofted ball, finds the run of Josh Stanford, keeper comes and makes the block, the ball ricochets
back out and into the path of their 2 who is running towards goal, who inadvertently sends the ball back
into the lleft side of his own net. The most bizarre of own goals. 2-1. More good work down the
right by Charley Robertson, lovely skill, great footwork, gets to the byline, ball into the box,
and a goalmouth scramble ensues, Josh Stanford shoots, Dean Grant shoots, there were others, but
all blocked/scrambled away. 2-1 at H-T.
Second half and Luke Harvey is on for Jamie Maxted.
And this is predominantly a catalogue of Faversham chances. Here we go:
George Monger brings the ball out of defence, spreads it to Dean Grant who gets into the box,
finds Charley Robertson just inside the area, Charley takes his time, tries to find space,
picks his spot, but the shot is saved. A George Monger corner from the right, John Scarborough
meets with a strong header, but it's straight at the keeper who parries away. George Monger's
long ball releases Dean Grant down the right, into the area and shoots. Keeper makes a
comfortable save on the ground. Ryan Cooper releases Luke Harvey down the right, Luke does well
and gets to the byline, finds Dean Grant on the edge of the area, Dean turns and shoots, but
it's straight at the keeper. Ryan Cooper's arrowed cross from right to left, met by a first-time
hit from Luke Harvey. The ball rifles back into the roof of the net. Great strike, great goal.
Well it would have been, had it not been for the lino's flag. Offside-be interesting to see that
one on the video. A George Monger corner from the right, met by John Scarborough at the back
stick, into the side netting-wrong side of. Close. A Charley Robertson run through the middle of
the park, slips in Dean Grant, in on goal, keeper comes to meet and makes the save. Corner. With
15/20 to go Liam King is on for Dean Grant. Luke Harvey drives through the midfield, strong run,
gets into the area, about to pull the trigger, a sliding defender gets a last-ditch block on
the shot. Corner. From a corner, the ball eventually works it way to Josh Stanford on the
edge of the box. Low shot, but wide of the right hand post. A slide rule Charley Robertson pass
finds Luke Harvey's run into the area, keeper comes and makes it difficult, but again into the
wrong side of the side-netting. A corner from the right, someone gets a slight head on it
(missed by whom-apologies), the ball strikes the foot of the right hand post and squirms away
to safety. It just will not go in!!! And with the clock ticking down, Luke Harvey does well
in the area, right side, blasts an angled shot, head height, aiming for inside of the near post.
Really decent strike, but once again, the keeper makes the save.
2-1 at F-T.
The second half really was as one-sided at that. A veritable battering. But credit where credit is
due and EG defended resolutely. Damn them!! But we certainly had the chances to win this game
convincingly.
Reasons to be cheerful (this might be tough today!!)
a) decent performance today, just couldn't deliver the result it deserved.
b) Ok, we're outsiders, but we go into the final match of the season with something to play for.
So the equation is simple. We need to beat Hythe next week and hope Hastings oblige by failing to beat
Herne Bay and Cor-Cas similarly fail to beat Three Bridges. Not impossible.
So there can only be one place to be next week. Salters Lane. Massive game. See you there.
