I often read the Forum but never post but it was my first time to Guernsey and I thought I would share some of the events from our trip away.
We met at approx 8pm and the was some classic attire on show from Clives aqua jumper to Dan C and Bola pitching up in full club tracksuit (school boy error) Dan and Bola went to change and Dan returned looking casual, Bola well black trainers white socks red swimming shorts and T shirt was a sight to behold.
The management team (I include Wendy and Ali) quickly sort refuge at a table away from the players (who all obeyed the 1 drink max) and were joined by the Chairman, Jonny N and wives. Great support we thought only to be dismayed when advised they were off to barbados and the Chairman enjoyed giving Ray and I some stick after the Palace lost to Watford.
The boys headed to the Sofitel hotel next door for a Chinese and I think to test the 1 drink rule away from prying eyes, Bola in his spendid outfit leading the charge, the only mystery was the missing Josh Stanford. A few beers were enjoyed and as normal the discussion was about the game the next day and Folkestone coming up the following week.
About 10 the players returned and seemed in great spirits Botts bought the entire vending machine and they heading off to bed. At 10.30 the gaffer asked me to go and check they boys and the friendly hotel staff provided me with all the room numbers, so off I went the first 2 rooms were empty the second had Scarbs in it top pro that man, the third had the rest of the team bar Josh, instructions were given meet at 6am. I returned to the bar and enjoyed some more Stella.
6am reception, Godmon asleep on the floor suffering along with George with dodgy guts but all were present including Josh who had unfortunately forgot his trainers so was rocking some brown brogues along with his FTFC tracksuit. Off we set to the airport only for Dan C to panic as lost his phone so back to the hotel for him but he soon returned, Scarbs was charged £10 as his bag was a mess and the wrapped it in clingfilm before taking it and poor Kingy had all his hair products taken at customs.
Breakfast consisted of Nandos Maccy Ds (Charlie 3 brekkies) and boredom set in whilst we waited, the flight was peacefull and only Maxted had a sweat on due to his fear of flying. We arrived got our bags and jumped in our mini busses into Guernsey, another breakfast was had at the local cafe and we wandered aimlessly around for 2 hours, until we went to the ground.
The pitch was soggy to say the least but the boys were focused on doing a job , Rays game plan was given and Clives motivation about what would be a good day had less expletives than usual but the boys were ready.
We started strongly and Ren had a great ealy chance only for Tardic to make a great save, across the pitch we looked strong and had a few half chances and seemed to be in control when Guernsey hit us on the break, great back heel great finish. We remained calm George and Dan C were dominating the midfield with Charlie and Josh giving us great width supported by Coops an J getting forward, Scarbs and Ash were like rocks. Charlie produces another run and a free kick was given, up steps George and finds the bottom corner though if you havent seen his celebration please watch it hilarious.
1-1 half time , direction and guidance from the Gaffer and Clive about being patient it will come proved to be so right,
2nd half we start brightly and in my opinion dominated the game, many shots and half chances with Josh and Charley giving the full backs problems and Luke showing true leadership in fighting for every ball and encouraging his team mates. Coops made a great block and Will didnt have a save to make though a great one he did make was given as a goal kick (so sorry Will). The game progresses and Ren who had been a threat all game with his speed and running almost gets on the end of a Maxted wonder ball which split the defence.
Ray makes the first change Kingy on for Ren, we continue to be in control and we continue to have chances, Luke with a header from Josh cross shot and then Kingy cuts inside its curling in Scarbs is celebrating post and out Ray turns talks to me and a few clive isms were shared. Jaime goes off with a nasty ankle and bourny is on. Then to finish Kingys little bit of magic a twist a turn a jink and bang 2-1 seconds remain the celebrations were mayhem the entire team on the touchline with the management team with Charlie having a 121 cuddle with Bill. Just time to make a final sub for 20 seconds Bola is on. The whistle goes relief excitement joy. Great respect to all the home fans who clapped the lads off and for any neutral it was agreat game.
The changing room was mayhem so much noise jubilation and banter which I cannot share.
Time for a well deserved beer and great hospitality whilst watching spurs and city, 5pm on the bus back to the aiport tired emotional but happy. Sid gives Ray some marital advice (none of it good) and we are on the plane. Clive has the back seat and is out like a light, into baggage reclaim and off we go home.
A great journey a great result, every one of thesquad was outstanding and a big thank you to Wendy who organised it all.
