Faversham Town 3-2 Redhill
Starting line up:
Simon Overland,
Ashley Brown, Matt Bourne, John Scarborough, Jamie Maxted,
Sam Bewick, George Monger, Wayne Wilson, Josh Stanford,
Dean Grant, Jack Harris.
Well, maybe closer than it should have been. But
when it mattered, we had the quality to win the game.
That's not to say that we will be removing Redhill from
our list of problem opponents (beat us twice last year).
Decent start from us. A Wayne Wilson corner from our right, Matt
Bourne arrives unmarked at the far post, decent header, keeper does
well. Dean Grant on the right, finds Josh Stanford's run into the area,
great defensive block. A flowing move, Wayne Wilson, to Jack Harris on
the left, gorgeous cross field pass, Sam Bewick's shot is saved.
Fine move. So 3 decent chances. And then panic at the other end.
Redhill attack down our right, a shot from outside the area hits
the bar, we fail to clear, comes out to their left, a drive and
shot and they hit the post. Our luck is in maybe, but no, Redhill's
next attack, a chipped ball over the defence, headed on and touched
home from the right hand side. 0-1. We have further chances,
John Scarborough's header is just wide from a Wayne Wilson corner.
Wayne Wilson and Jack Harris combine to set up Sam Bewick, the
shot is just wide, And just before H-T, an important save by
Simon Overland, comies to the edge of his area to end a Redhill
raid. Good save. 0-1 at H-T.
Whatever was said at half-time, we were much better. Straight out
of the blocks. A trio of chances, shots from Jamie Maxted, Dean
Grant and Josh Stanford all go close. Wayne Wilson spreads the
ball to Josh Stanford on the left, finds Jamie Maxted, drives
into the box, shirt being pulled, surely a foul, finds a great
strike, keeper finds a great save. Josh Stanford finds Dean
Grant out on the right, great cross to the far stick, Jack
Harris heads over. But we're pushing. Sam Bewick's cross field
ball, right to left, finds Josh Stanford, Josh is brought down.
Free-kick, 25 yards out. Wayne Wilson territory. Fantastic free-kick.
keeper's top right hand corner, keeper didn't move, completely beaten.
And then, minutes later, excellent work from Dean Grant down the right,
gets the cross in and George Monger is on hand to head home. But
having worked hard to get in front, we concede a soft goal, we allow
a shot on goal. scuffed at that, and it sneaks home. 2-2. 3 goals in
4 minutes. Salters Lane, the place for entertainment!!
But surely, it's not going to be one of those days. John Scarborough
puts it home from a Wayne Wilson free-kick. Offside flag goes up.
A Wayne Wilson corner, John Scarborough's header is cleared off the
line. A George Monger volley from the edge of the area is tipped
over by the keeper. Great save. Dave Botterill and Kieran Oliver
are on for. Ashley Brown and Jack Harris. With 10 to go Josh Stanford
wins the ball, plays in Kieran Oliver into the box, shoots and a penalty
is awarded. Handball. Wayne Wilson steps up, this time power rather than
direction. The desired result-straight down the middle. Great strike.
One last chance, a Sam Bewick cross fom the right, Wayne Wilson hits the
bar and Jack Harris can't quite force the rebound home.
So reasons to be cheerful:
a) we consolidate second in R1S.
b) our hoodoo over Redhill has been broken
c) still unbeaten at home - played 8 won 7 drawn 1. A formidable record.
d) and a decent home win. Another 3 goals and a plus 200 crowd. All good.
Didn't hear the Sponsors' MOM so I'm sure that allows carte blanche to
nominate. For me Wayne Wilson, big performance today.
