Bexhill 0-5 Faversham Town
Starting line up:
Tom Benham, Ryan Cooper, Jamie Maxted, Matt Bourne, John Scarborough, Charley Robertson, George Monger, Wayne Wilson, Taser Hassan, Stuart King, Dean Grant.
So, let's set a scene (not necessarily the scene). The financial rewards, yep, that'd be nice. Us fans, well, we love a cup run, don't we? Maybe memories of a similar scenario last year. On the point of going out to lower league opposition with minutes to go.
So, perhaps a bit of pressure then. Well, it didn't show. No last minute heroics required this year. Job comprehensively done.
Good start from us. Early chances. Charley Robertson plays in Stuart King. Stuart turns, shoots, just over. More good build up play, Stuart King stings the keepers' hands. Corner, our left. Wayne Wilson's corner causes problems and straight into the net it goes. Well not quite straight into the net-looked like a deflection-but I couldn't be sure by whom. See later!! So 5 minutes 0-1. For some reason this is celebrated by the Salters Lane PA system regaling us with the Beatles-Twist and Shout. Well, why not. Don't answer that! Charley Robertson is brought down in mid flow. Free-kick. Wayne Wilson from our right. Finds Dean Grant in space, fires over. On 25 Bexhill start to find some attacking threat. A Bexhill man finds a good position in the box, Tom Benham anticipates and spreads himself well at the attackers' feet. Really fine, goal preventing save. Bexhill fancy their chances from long range-easily gathered by our keeper. And then their 7, who had a decent game, runs right at us, gets through, one on one with our keeper. Tom Benham get's it spot on, comes and closes down. Top, top save. That was Bexhill's best period and best chance of the match. And within a minute, at the other end, we're awarded a free-kick (handball). Approximately 3 yards outside the box, our right. Wayne Wilson steps up. Viewing from behind, it was one of those that you knew it was in from the moment it left the strikers' foot. Glorious strike, the ball arcs into the far side-netting. Keeper, no chance. On 28 minutes, 0-2. And 3 minute later, we capitilise on some indecision in the Bexhill defence, Ryan Cooper chases down, the ball eventually arrives at Charley Robertson's feet, 30 yards out, takes a few strides, just outside the box and strokes home into the right hand side of the goal. 0-3. Not celebrating the goal, but during play, we get another random rendition of the Beatles' Twist and Shout. Just saying! A few more chances before half-time Wayne Wilson is just wide after good work from Charley Robertson. Stuart King forces a good block from their keeper. Stuart King finds Dean Grant, the shot is saved to the keepers' right. Corner. So, 0-3 at H-T.
So the first goal. OG, straight in, one of our players? I couldn't tell. So the best thing to do, is to ask for a preview of CJK's video. And I still didn't get a good view!!!. But those that did are willing to testify that it's Dean Grant's goal.
Second half. More chances. A raking, cross field ball from Jamie Maxted, finds Ryan Cooper in an advanced position, inside to Stuart King, the volley is just wide. On 15 minutes Taser Hassan makes way for Mobolaji Dawodu. Stuart King chases down a back pass, the keeper clears, the ball ricochets of Stuart. Goes wide, could've gone anywhere. A bit of controversy on 25, a bit of a scramble in the area, referee (who is still in the opposite half) seems to award Bexhill a penalty. Well, it looked soft and I couldn't see what the problem was. Anyway, referee consults with his linesman and the decision is reversed. So our free-kick. I don't know what the free-kick was for either!!. At the other end, we're awarded a free--kick, Wayne Wilson finds Dean Grant on our right, inside to Stuart King, the volley is well-struck and into the far side of the net.. Goal. But, offside. With 15 to go, a double substitution. Dan King and Dan Carrington are on for John Scarborough and George Monger. With 12 to go Charley Robertson runs at the defence, lays it to Stuart King , just outside the box, our right, controls, rolls it forward and strikes. Curled high to the far post, and in off the post-nestling very snugly in the back of the net. Lovely goal. Curiously, the PA system spurns the opportunity to celebrate our fab fourth goal with Twist and Shout by the Beatles. 2 minutes later and another Charley Robertson run is brought to an abrupt end. Free-kick. Just outside the box, our left. Wayne Wilson, goal. Keeper gets hands on to it, but only helps it inevitably into the net.
Straight into reasons to be cheerful:
a) no hint of a banana skin. Comprehensive. 5 goals. Clean sheet. Job done. b) the FA Cup dream lives on - bring on Staines (??) c) more footy at Salters Lane on Monday, Chatham visit.
No Sponsors' MOM today, given that this was effectively Bexhill's home game. So the usual rules apply. For me, today, Stuart King, always a threat. Not to mention a damned fine goal.
P.S. Top team performance.

Andy Atkin, (I watched him when he was with Eastbourne Borough in Conference Premier days), their 18, went down like a sack of spuds.
When I get round to it, I'll upload my pics of the game.which would include at least the second goal, and provide a link
