Faversham Town 3-1 Molesey
Starting line up:
Tom Benham,
Ryan Cooper, Jamie Maxted, Matt Bourne, John Scarborough,
Charley Robertson, George Monger, Wayne Wilson, Dave Botterill,
Stuart King, Dean Grant.
New opposition today,(promoted last year from the Combined Counties League),
so an element of the unknown about this. But what is known is that
it was bleedin' hot out there. So that needs factoring in.
Very ambitious start from Molesey, a direct punt at goal from the kick-off.
The first kick of the game sails wide, but not that wide. Goal-kick.
But a really good start from us, we look lively, very lively. On 6 minutes, their 2's mistake allows
the ball to go for a throw in-our left. Botts heads on into the path of Dean Grant, Stuart King
makes a run inside the box, Dean uses him by not using him and takes the shot on, decent
strike, seems to swing awkwardly in the air, which is enough to beat the opposition keeper.
The ball nestles nicely in the right hand side of the net. 1-0, we're up and running.
An element of maybe the keeper should have done better-but let's see what the video shows.
Minutes later and the same trio combine again, Dave Botterill heads on, Dean Grant collects,
this time plays in Stuart King, Stuart rounds the keeper, slight angle to negotiate, not too
much on the shot, but it's going goalwards, we're willing it in, but it rolls slowly, agonisingly,
wide of the right hand post. Close. Stuart King reacts to a defensive lapse, gets a shot on, keeper doesn't
know too much about it, but the block is made, the rebound comes out to George Monger, the strike
is just over. The battering continues, a neat Dave Botterill pass, Stuart King is one on one with
keeper, the keeper saves with his foot. Corner.
We're all over Molesey, we could/should be out of sight already. But fair play to their keeper, he's
had a hand in keeping Molesey in the game.
And then on 30 minutes, a calamity, a rare Molesey foray, they're in and around our box.
We spurn 2, 3 maybe 4 chances to clear our lines, a Molesey man gets a shot in, cannons off our keeper
and into our net. One of those stunned silence moments. They come around now and again at footy matches.
Your team have been so in control, playing well, all is going swimmingly. Lazy thoughts about how many
you might score, and then....
How did that happen.
And it seems to affect us, Molesey grow in confidence. They start to enjoy more possession. We're not
necessarily under great threat, but likewise our threat seems to have gone. And so goes the final 15. No real
chances. The half time whistle....
Second half, and a promising start, the Molesey defence gift us possession, Wayne Wilson plays in Dean Grant,
the shot is narrowly wide. But then we're uncharacteristically generous at the back. Matt Bourne's back pass
is strong, Tom Benham has to use his chest, it comes out to a Moseley forward, the shot rolls just
wide of the right hand post. The same post that similarly denied Stuart King in the first half. We respond.
On 52, we're awarded a free-kick, out left, near the touchline. Wayne Wilson steps up. Goal. Great strike. Keeper
gets a hand to it, but there's too much on it. Into the far corner. 2-1. Rapturously received, I should add.
Glorious. Molesey respond, a cross from their left, point blank, sharp header. Tom Benham makes a fine reflex
save to preserve our lead. Corner. On 60, we win a throw. Ryan Cooper launches one into the area,
it's headed goalwards, the ball comes off the keeper, into the path of Matt Bourne, about the penalty spot,
Matt takes his time, picks his spot, drives home. Calmly done.
Mobolaji Dawodu replaces Charley Robertson.
With 20 to go, Tom Benham makes an important save at a Molesey striker's feet to preserve our 2 goal lead.
But the 2 quick goals seem to have knocked our opponents and we're back in full control.
Soon after Renford Tenyue replaces Stuart King.
Two more chances of note. Good work by Bola down our right, swings in an inviting centre, Renford takes it
first time, gets a shot away, their keeper makes another decent save.
With 15 to go, Dave Botterill makes way for Dan King.
Final decent chance, a Ryan Cooper throw, eventually comes out to George Monger, who lets fly from the
edge of the box, just wide.
So, I've gone on for far too long-as ever. So,
Reasons to be cheerful:
a) we fully deserved our 3-1 today. And in testing conditions.
b) 3 goals for the first time this year.
c) moving up that table - 7th now.
d) a fab day out in general.
Sponsors' MOM: Matt Bourne.
To D'Bay on Tuesday. See you there.
